Last night, a really wonderful group of people got together to celebrate La Festa Delle Donne with Sandra Sicolo’s All Italian Things Club. This group is based in Boca Raton, FL, and holds language lessons and special events in different places throughout Palm Beach County. La Festa Delle Donne is Italy’s version of International Women’s Day, which is held every year on March 8th.
Sandra and her husband, Giovanni Sicolo, are both from Bari in Italy’s Puglia region and Sandra’s sister and brother-in-law were also there. On the other side of our large table was a man from Milan. The rest of us were Italian Americans and Italophiles. Everyone spoke about Italy and the different regions and places they have traveled to. Everyone shared a love for the country and its culture.
The point of La Festa Delle Donne, which is a much bigger deal in Italy than it is in the US, is to celebrate all the beautiful and wonderful women in our lives. The men especially are expected to show their appreciation by buying flowers for the women and the traditional flower is the yellow mimosa. Unfortunately, mimosas are near impossible to find in South Florida, so Giovanni gave all the ladies a pink rose instead!
Here’s a favorite poem from Maya Angelou (who I got to hear speak at Congregation B’Nai Israel in Boca Raton a few months ago at) to honor all the wonderful women I know.
